Nice (/ˈniːs/, French pronunciation: [nis]; Niçard Occitan: Niça [classical norm] or Nissa [nonstandard], Italian: Nizza or Nizza Marittima, Greek: Νίκαια, Latin: Nicaea) is the fifth most populous city in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse, and it is the capital of the Alpes Maritimes département.
Nice, capital of the French Riviera, skirts the pebbly shores of the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for 19th-century Europe’s elite, the city today balances old-world decadence with modern urban energy. Its sunshine and liberal attitude have long attracted artists, whose work hangs in its museums. With vibrant markets and diverse restaurants, it’s also renowned for its food.
The urban area of Nice extends beyond the administrative city limits, with a population of about 1 million on an area of 721 km2 (278 sq mi).
Located in the Côte d’Azur area on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region after Marseille. Nice is about 8 miles (13 km) from the principality of Monaco, and its airport is a gateway to the principality as well.
The city is called Nice la Belle (Nissa La Bella in Niçard), which means Nice the Beautiful, which is also the title of the unofficial anthem of Nice, written by Menica Rondelly in 1912.
Last year the Saint-Jean d’Angely Campus in the context of 50 years celebration of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, hosted Nice Fictions 2015, the first Festival of the Southern Imagination devoted to all imaginary genres and short creations.
The first edition was a success. There were more than 1500 visitors, of all ages, during three days to meet writers and publishers, illustrators and artists. The visitors participated also in board games sessions, RPGs, video games, exhibitions, book signings and a giant party.
Panels were also proposed, involving among other participants, professors and researchers of the University of Nice on various themes including the digital future of the university, the ecology or the future of science fiction as a pedagogic tool.
The second edition of Nice Fictions Festival is taking place also within the Saint-Jean d’Angely Campus for three days : from Friday, the 22nd of April until Sunday, the 24th of April 2016.
The Nice Fictions Festival’s organizers are Ugo Bellagamba, Hélène Cruciani, Hélène Marchetto, Sybille Marchetto, Stéphane Guibert, Léo Lallot, Jérôme Gayol and Olivier Sanfilippo.
