UNIVERSE PATHWAYS has always been a magazine which supported and believed in and was supported by Greek writers of Fantasy Literature. One of the basic reasons that led to the decision for the publication of the first issue seven years ago was the need for a magazine, where short stories by Greek writers of fantasy literature could be published, without discriminations or limitations.
We have given the opportunity to more than 200 Greek writers of fantasy literature to present their interesting works through the pages of the magazine.
We always honor all the great writers of the genre, Greek and foreign alike, and especially the ones who have a precious gift and can create worlds in their fiction.
Taking into account the above and since we believe that his work must be made widely known in Greece, we decided to pay a special tribute to one of the greatest writers in the world, who honored us by allowing us to publish his books in Greece, namely Larry Niven.
So, with the opportunity of the ceremony for the seven years of the continuous publication of UNIVERSE PATHWAYS magazine we announce the organization, for the first time in Greece, of the competitions for the “Larry Niven Awards for Fantasy Literature”.
Aims of the competion:
– To promote the Greek Fantasy Literature and the genre as a whole.
– To honor the legend of Larry Niven, his literary achievements and his contribution to the genre of Fantasy Literature.
– To give the chance to new writers to present and promote their work.
– As far as “Space 2150” Award is concerned, apart from the above, it also aspires to present and promote Greek fantasy literature to foreign writers and foreign friends of the genre.
– Also, we aim to develop the competition in the future and add new award categories during the next years. We will wait submissions and ideas from all Europe. With the help of our friends and science fiction writers and fans from all over Europe we will try to expand the Awards and we will try our best to support and promote the science fiction.
About the organization of the competition:
The competition for the “LARRY NIVEN AWARDS for Fantasy Literature” will take place every year.
There will be five categories of awards.
– “Science Fiction” Award.
– Category short story. (Short stories will be selected after a public call.)
The short story must be up to 2500 words.
Category novelette. (Novelettes will be selected after a public call.)
The novelette must be up to 7500 words.
– “Fantasy” Award.
– Category short story. (Short stories will be selected after a public call.)
The short story must be up to 2500 words.
Category novelette. (Novelettes will be selected after a public call.)
The novelette must be up to 7500 words.
– “Terror” Award, for the specific subgenre.
– Category short story. (Short stories will be selected after a public call.)
The short story must be up to 2500 words.
Category novelette. (Novelettes will be selected after a public call.)
The novelette must be up to 7500 words.
“Space 2150 Award”, for foreign writers.
Category Novel.
Terms for participation.
– Participation is not allowed to members or former member of the editorial board of UNIVERSE PATHWAYS magazine and to their first degree relatives.
– Participation is not allowed to writers who have published their work to “UNIVERSE PATHWAYS Editions” and to their first degree relatives.
– Participation is not allowed to those who had or have a professional affiliation with “UNIVERSE PATHWAYS Editions”, those who edited texts, translated or wrote articles for UNIVERSE PATHWAYS magazine and to their first degree relatives.
– Writers from publishing houses with which “UNIVERSE PATHWAYS Editions” have financial associations are not allowed to participate in the competition.
– The texts must not have been published previously, either in a written form or on the Internet.
– The texts must be submitted in the Greek language.
– Candidates can participate with only one text per category, but they can participate in more categories than one.
– Participation is open for everyone and free of charge.
– The texts must be send to the magazine until 1 October 2012. No extension will be given to the participation deadline.

Special terms – Presentation of awards:
– For reasons of a properly conducted competition the awards for the categories of short stories and novelettes will be conferred only if there are at least 35 participations in each category.
– The presentation of the awards to the winners will take place in a special ceremony in December 2012 in Athens. The location will be announced. After the presentation of the awards the prizes will be given to the winners.
– The participations will be judged by the editorial board of “UNIVERSE PATHWAYS” magazine. Each participation will be evaluated according to the following characteristics: quality of literary writing, originality of myth, structure of the plot.
– Submission of a text implies total acceptance of the terms of the competition. If participants do not follow the instructions for the submissions and the terms of the competition, their participation will be cancelled.
